Record Times on the Rekortan – Motivation on Margaret Island

Record Times on the Rekortan – Motivation on Margaret Island

The running track on Margaret Island is already an inspiring place for those who want to exercise – but now runners can find even greater motivation: in recent days, world-class athletes’ records have appeared on the Rekortan surface. At several points along the track, the message reads: “How fast can you run this distance?” – a question that not only prompts reflection but also presents a challenge.

The current record holders in athletics – including legendary athletes – are now symbolically present on Margaret Island. Their incredible achievements are displayed in the form of record times on the track, reminding everyone that while goals may seem distant, with dedication and perseverance, anyone can get closer to their personal best.

World records featured include:

  • Usain Bolt’s 9.58 for 100 meters,
  • David Rudisha’s 1:40.91 for 800 meters,
  • Faith Kipyegon’s 3:49.04 for 1500 meters.

Alongside the international stars, outstanding achievements by Hungarian athletes are also featured:

  • Roland Németh’s 10.08,
  • Boglárka Takács’s national record of 11.06 in the 100 meters,
  • Katalin Szentgyörgyi’s 8:32.70 in the 3000 meters.

The markings were created at the initiative of the organizers of the Gyulai István Memorial – Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix, taking place on August 12. The goal of the event is not only to host a world-class athletics competition in Hungary but also to promote the sport and encourage people to lead a more active lifestyle.

Regarding the initiative, Dr. Ádám Schmidt, State Secretary for Sport, stated:

“In sports governance, we support the hosting of major international events like the Gyulai István Memorial or next year’s World Athletics Ultimate Championship because we believe that witnessing the best of the best in person and experiencing the electrifying atmosphere of such competitions has a special impact on all our fellow citizens. I trust that, within the framework of our Sport Nation Program, the motivational quotes painted on the Margaret Island track, along with the records now on display, and the example set by both Hungarian and international stars competing at the National Athletics Centre, will inspire many people toward a more active lifestyle, enriching the Hungarian athletics family in both elite and community sports.”

The organizers encourage sports enthusiasts not only to enjoy athletics as spectators but – whenever possible – to try the sport themselves. This is also the aim of the “How fast can you run 100 meters?” campaign, which emphasizes that no matter our level, there is always room for improvement – and even a single 100-meter run can be a serious challenge and a source of joy.

Speaking about the importance of promoting athletics, Boglárka Takács said:

“I believe athletics is for everyone – not just for professionals, but also for those who run or move for joy. If I, if we, can motivate even one person to put on their running shoes, it’s already worth it.”

After 11 years, the Gyulai István Memorial – Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix returns to Budapest, to be held at the National Athletics Centre on August 12. As part of the WA Continental Tour Gold series, it is one of the world’s most prestigious one-day athletics events – so it’s no surprise that global stars are coming to the Hungarian capital again this year.

Among the participants are:

  • Armand Duplantis, world record holder in pole vault,
  • Femke Bol, Olympic and world champion in the 400m hurdles,
  • Ethan Katzberg, the youngest world champion in hammer throw,
  • Miltiadis Tentoglou, double Olympic champion in long jump.

Naturally, Hungarian athletes will also be represented, including:

  • Bence Halász, Olympic silver medalist and world bronze medalist in hammer throw,
  • Attila Molnár, indoor European champion and world bronze medalist in relay,
  • Luca Kozák, European silver medalist hurdler,
  • and Boglárka Takács, Olympian sprinter, who will also be competing.

The event is organized by the National Event Management Agency in cooperation with the Hungarian Athletics Federation.
